Anatomy of a strong lesson plan
Whatever curriculum you teach, a strong lesson plan has the same skeleton:
- Topic & class level
- Learning objectives (what learners will be able to do)
- Prior knowledge (what they already know)
- Instructional materials (chalk, posters, real objects)
- Presentation steps (introduction β development β practice)
- Evaluation (questions and short tasks)
- Assignment / homework
When you ask AI for a lesson plan, ask for every one of these explicitly. Otherwise you'll get a 4-paragraph essay instead of a plan.
Feed the AI your curriculum
AI doesn't automatically know your scheme of work. Paste it in. Even a single line works:

After your first lesson plan, just say:

- "Make a simpler version for a Primary 4 class."
One sentence of follow-up replaces 30 minutes of rewriting.
Localisation β making it feel like home
AI defaults to American or generic examples. Force it to localise:
- "Use Nigerian names β Adaeze, Musa, Tunde β not John and Mary."
- "Use Naira, not dollars."
- "Replace the apples with mangoes, cassava, or yams."
- "Mention boda-boda, danfo, or okada where transport is needed."
- "Use Yoruba, Hausa, or Igbo words where it fits naturally."
Save these instructions as a reusable "Localisation block" you append to every prompt.
From lesson plan to student note
Once your lesson plan is ready, ask:
"Now turn the content of this lesson plan into a 1-page student note in simple English suitable for a JSS1 pupil. Use short sentences, 3 headings, and a 5-question 'Check yourself' section at the end."
You now have:

The final edit β always
AI gets things wrong. Common errors to watch for:
- Foreign examples slipping back in
- Wrong dates, names, or science facts
- Misalignment with your specific syllabus
- Vocabulary above (or below) your class level
- Activities that need materials you don't have
Rule of thumb: AI drafts; the teacher decides. Spend the saved time reviewing for accuracy and cultural fit β not retyping the whole thing.
