What the numbers say
- WAEC is more volatile than NECO. WAEC pass rates have swung from 64% to 82% to 63% over 7 years. NECO has stayed remarkably steady at roughly 60–62%.
- 2021 was the high-water mark. WAEC's 81.70% pass rate has not been matched since — a useful baseline when judging future results.
- 2025 was a turbulent year for WAEC. The initially announced 38.32% pass rate was revised to 62.96% after a technical review. School owners should expect higher scrutiny of WAEC results going forward.
- Candidate volumes are rising fast. WAEC candidates grew from ~1.59M in 2019 to ~1.97M in 2025 — a 24% increase. School supply must scale with this demand.
- Schools targeting university admission should set internal targets above the WAEC headline rate, because cut-off marks at competitive universities require not just 5 credits but high grades in specific subjects.
